The Key to Achieving Your Goals
Vital Steps to Goal Setting - Beyond SMART
The following may appear a bit preachy, but deliberately so! Whether you want to lose weight get fit or develop that new idea for your business it’s about this time of year when people drop their New Year resolutions. Most goal setting does not work, for the simple reason that most people confuse ‘wishing’ with coherent and aligned strategic goal setting.
Personally, I commit to some really big goals that will make a difference to me personally and my business and to do this I use a specific process called the ‘The 4-MAT System’ based on the research work of Bernice McCarthy which addresses four key learning styles.
Before we go into that I wanted to share some of my Big Strategic Goals for 2019 and 2020 and then explain the 4-MAT System and how it fits with standard goal setting.
Demystify and Apply Internet Marketing
My big issue is debunking and demystifying Internet Marketing in 3 core market sectors for me. The key issue is not making more product, and the key critical success factor is how well these three themes are marketed.
That’s why I am applying the theme of this posting – ‘The Key to achieve Your Goals’. I will briefly explain my three Goals and then explain how you can use the Goal Setting process to ‘Achieving Your Goals’.
My new 3 goals all focus on my on-line businesses.
1. Kindle Books
I have written 7 business (hard and softback) books and am an author of over 300+ refereed Journal articles on Organisational and Personal change, so, unsurprisingly I am working using that knowledge and input to publish in Kindle format on the Amazon platform. Up to now I have three final edit proofs and I am working through the process of editing and uploading them.
2. Learning Management System (LMS)
I also have 4 LMS’s, all focused on equipping people with gaining ISO certification in Business Transformation (Lean Six Sigma) at Yellow, Green, Black and Master Black Belt level www.lean-six-sigma-OD-training.com The challenge is to market these to a wider audience than my current data base allows, and win new students for all levels of Business Transformation certification.
3. Video Training Packages
I also have 5 Video based training programmes ‘Mastering Potential’ currently available on the Udemy Platform in the USA.
So, there is plenty of product – but, in reality, I have only done 10% of the job in getting these products to market. The market research behind their creation is solid but execution of marketing plans is what will occupy my time for the next 6-24 months.
SMART is ‘old style’ Goal Setting
Enthusiasm and energy are essential to reach for any goal. And, although I always adhere to the simple SMART formula of Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Reviewable and Time-based, goal setting, there has to be a major marketing propulsion system to make it work.
Excite, Energize and be Obsessive
Although SMART helps, does it really ignite personal enthusiasm? Achieving your goals has to be something that keeps you out of bed at night and projects you out of bed in the morning. Achieving your goals has to ignite and excite your inner self and almost become and obsession. It has to be a core motivation. It should occupy most of your thinking time and when we talk about our Goals, they should boost a positive and active mindset, and, like a Christmas tree, lighten and brighten up our mood and motivation.
The 4-MAT System
I much prefer a new 4-part system referred to as 4-MAT System which is based on asking four questions ‘self-reflective’ questions. Here is a brief explanation of the system, but if you want to find out more about the detail contact me direct.
4 Questions for setting and achieving goals in uncertain times
Question 1 - WHAT are your key goals? – use the SMART formula above for this. Identifying your goals is only 10% of effective goal setting. Setting Goals without execution is only marginally effective. Executive and action are vital.
Question 2 - The next question is the big one. This is huge and is the question that will determine whether you achieve the goal or not. The question is WHY? You have to generate as many answers as possible which focus on the benefits that will accrue to you and your business.
Amplify the reasons why and then double the intensity to make them totally compelling
You have to amplify your response to the WHY questions so that you have at least 50 answers that should be motivating, compelling and make you passionate to achieve them. If your WHY’s are wimpy, that is of no value and will have little impact on you and your life style – that’s probably why you have failed in the past.
There has to be no doubt – only total Certainty you will achieve them
The benefits have to create a feeling and emotional commitment of total CERTAINTY that you must and will achieve them above all other things
You have to develop a really positive and optimistic mindset. If you attend one of my workshops, you will know what a motivating energy this gives you. We work with you to crank up and leverage the WHY’s in your goal-setting so they become imploringly and blisteringly alluring, captivating, energizing and non-negotiable. They must become a certainty in your mind and demonstrated in your behaviours.
So, what are the questions that will trigger between 50 -100 responses?
A big tip here. If you really want to achieve your goals, you need a massive list of ‘WHY’ benefits. The more ‘why’ benefits you have, the more psychologically compelling that goal will become. You need to be able to answer, ‘Why should I do this?’
The goals must be compelling, stimulating, exciting, stretching, align with your personal values, and fit with your personal mission.
Does your Dream have Legs?
If you are not too exhausted, now you need to work on two further goals. They are really a test to make sure you are pursuing things of value. Its too easy to pursue a dream that has no legs. Don’t worry too much about how you will achieve this, just focus on the WHY?
Question 3 – This is important but not critical and it has to do with ‘HOW am I going to achieve this goal?’ A word of caution here. Too many people feel the need to know the ‘how’. Don’t focus on this just now – focus on WHY you want to achieve the goal and all the benefits that will arise for you. The ‘HOW’s’ will evolve naturally if you have a big enough WHY?
Question 4 - This last question is a safety question or one that gets you to assess risk. It is the ‘WHAT IF’ question. ‘What if’ questions are asking you to think about what else could influence whether you achieve the goal or not.
These are questions that ensure that I have 100% ownership of the outcome – that puts me in the driving seat, controlling and causing things to happen. They force me to take 100% personal ownership.
Be positive and optimistic. Dismiss any negativity, because these are ready made excuses or ‘get outs’ for not achieving your personal goals.
You have to take all the conditional statements away and focus on what you can do personally to make things happen.
You also have to ask probably the most important question of all. This will determine whether you achieve your goals or not. Here it is …. Do you really believe you can make this happen? You need a 100% YES response to this, where there is no turning back.
Keep me informed of your process and how it works for you.
And remember, always focus on the WHY.
